Give a Girl a Camera and Look What Happens!
October 28th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Local Communities, Music, Real Estate News
The following photos were taken by our daughter on the way to her drum lesson at Columbus Percussion. It is with pride that I share these amazing photos with you. After a gray and rainy day, this beautiful sight ushered in our evening and for that we were grateful. Since I try to take my camera everywhere I happened to have it with us on our ride and I told her to have at it and have some fun. She did and this is just a sampling of those results.

By the way, her drum instructor is none other than Ed Davis, who currently plays with Red Wanting Blue. Ed has been teaching our girl for two years - in between touring and playing locally. He graduated from Capital University Conservatory of Music and has a great way with teaching kids - and playing! If you’re interested in going to the largest gathering of percussionists and exhibitors, check out PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) to be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Explore everything from cool sticks to the PASIC Indoor Marching Percussion Festival to an evening of incredible music at the Percussion Extravaganza held at the Columbus Music Hall. We went two years ago and were blown away by the talent contained under one roof.
While she’s away during her lesson I get a chance to play and here are a few goodies I came up with. Beauty can be found splashed across the sky or tucked away in a drum shop. It’s there, if you just look for it.

This week I also showed a couple condo conversions and single family homes in the same neighborhood as Columbus Percussion. I’ll be curious to see as the condos in these former multi-family rentals are sold, what the other multi-family buildings in the area will do. And when will they do it? To convert, or not to convert, that is the question. I am confident the trend of converting apartments to condos will be here for quite a while to come. It is a unique way to reinvent housing in some of Columbus’ greatest areas.
For many years the Clintonville/Beechwold area has had an active real estate market. Below is an overview of activity between $125000–175,000 since the first of August.

The Pumpkin Patch
October 18th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Local Communities, Recreation
Last Sunday my wife and daughters and I made a trip to the Grove City area to spend some time at Circle S Farms. Our girls had been there in first grade and remembered it being a great time. I think the perspective is a bit different as a fifth grader, but it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the farm.
I thought I would share some photos captured along the way.

A nice sunny day……………….

If you go, don’t miss the “Fun Barn”……………..

Wide open spaces……………

I’ve got my eye on you…………

Blowin’ in the wind…………..

My daughters thought the corn maze was a-maze-ing……

Oh yeah, don’t forget the pumpkins………..

Bright Lights - Get out of the City!
August 12th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Local Communities, Real Estate Professionals, Recreation
For at least one night our family will be heading here, to join another family member so we can view the fabulous Perseid meteor shower under a clear, dark sky. This is supposed to be a great one and we are especially excited to check them out. Since we live in Westerville, we have a city-lit sky making it a tad unremarkable to see the showers. Mind you, we are able to see the evening sky rather well, but for optimal viewing pleasure, we decided to head to Delaware County, where the lights are fewer and the night sky darker.
After hoping to get some sleep, we’ll awaken around 4:00 am as we discovered this will be the best time to view this annual display of astronomical wonder. We understand that for the majority of you out there, this might be difficult to arrange with regular work hours arriving soon after sunset. One of the great benefits of being in a two Realtor household is we can be somewhat flexible with our schedules. At least that’s what we tell the kids when they question why we might occasionally be home after dinner. “Remember when we spent the night at Grandmom’s and watched the Great Perseids and then slept in really late on a Monday morning? Remember?”
If you’d like to see them locally, here are a few fine area parks offering meteor watching opportunities. If you happen to miss them on August 12, check out these other dates and events for more showers.
If you’d like to check out other celestial events at an active research facility, the Perkins Observatory offers many public viewing opportunities - year round. They do charge a nominal fee, but think of the tour guides they have there! People who know what they’re talking about and can point you in the right direction!
Our family loves exploring and honoring the outdoors, whether it be in our own backyard, area parks, or the national parks our amazing country has to offer. Simple, easy activities such as these will hopefully fill the memory banks of our children and in-laws as well as continue to harvest a sense of wonder.

Ohio State Football is coming….Here we go again!
August 7th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Local Communities, Recreation, Sports
It’s true. We are less than a month away from kick off at the Horseshoe. I realize many think our passion for Buckeye Football here in Columbus borders on insane. I for one enjoy the ride each year and am looking forward to another season.
I consider myself a die hard fan and despite last year’s humiliating loss to Florida and the loss of so many talented players, I believe in this year’s squad. Last year was a great run, but it is in the past. Let’s look to the future whatever record it may bring.
And as we look to the future I offer some suggestions for good fan behavior. My time at the 2006 Michigan game, which was potentially one of the best college football games of all time, was marred seriously by ignorant, rude and childish fan behavior from all ages.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a bit of tailgating before the game just as much as the next Bucks fan. The reality, however is that too many take it too far. Drunken, cursing fans and burning couches are unbecoming to say the least.
I would think every OSU fan would want visitors to our area to be impressed by our home town including the people, the sports facilities, the sportsmanship and the football team. With this in mind I would encourage everyone attending a Buckeye game to consider the following:
- We are ambassadors of the University, the City of Columbus and the State of Ohio.
- It really is, in the end, just a game.
- The players on the field are just kids and they work incredibly hard to provide the sporting entertainment we so enjoy. Honor them.
- We owe it to the younger generations in the crowd to see what true sportsmanship is and how to be a true fan, win or lose.
- We know what is right and wrong. Remember the golden rule and treat others as you would like to be treated.
I believe we can be the best fans in the land, but from my experience this has not been the case. I attend many games and I LOVE Buckeye Football. My comments here are not meant to criticize the fans as a whole or to take away from the excitement of the coming season.
I just know the Horseshoe can be a better place on Saturday afternoons. With all of this in mind, dig out your Buckeye necklace and the four paneled scarlet and gray corduroys, smear on some face paint and GO Bucks!
O-H!

Music and Arts in the air in Westerville….again!
July 15th, 2007 categories: Entertainment, Local Communities, Music, The Arts, Westerville
For the 34th time the Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce pulled it off. A wonderful weekend of Art, Music and Food. Here’s to the beautiful weather and the winds which helped make the temperatures pleasant.
I must admit I was sad when the event moved from Otterbein College. I enjoyed the quaintness of the campus and the abundance of shade. I will admit, however I am a convert.
This was the seventh year at Heritage Park. Clearly this venue was meant to host this event. The winding paths offer the perfect setup for the numerous vendors. The Everal Barn offers a prime setting for a fantastic line up of entertainment, and the location provides for easier access and more parking. I do miss the shade, however.
The setting is great for families and if you are an area resident you are sure to stop often to catch up with friends and neighbors enjoying the event.
If you missed it this year, be sure to keep it on your radar for next year.
A few favorites not to be missed include:
- Roasted Almonds
- Lemon Shake Ups with Lots of Sugar
- A stroll through the vendor booths
- Lunch and some live music
Whether you go to buy, look, or just take in the experience, it really is a great place to be!

Summertime, Summertime, Sum-Sum-Summertime!
June 26th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Lewis Center, Local Communities, Recreation, Sports
Central Ohio is a bastion of outdoor activity this summer. We may not have mountains and we may not have the ocean, but we do have a vast array of outdoor recreational choices for you to indulge yourself, your family or even Fido.
We have Alum Creek State Park. Not only is there a 3,000 foot beach offering a changing area and concession stand, but Alum Creek Resevoir is a dream for boaters and water skiers.

Nearby is the 4 acre Alum Creek Dog Park, where fellow Fidos will think they left the suburbs and went to heaven. Alum Creek Dog Park offers separate fenced areas for large and small dogs as well as a fenced beach area to cool off on a hot day. Simple, unadulterated, canine bliss, my friends.

Also worth mentioning is the venerable Alum Creek Mountain Bike Trail, which offers beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. Get your heart rate going in the fresh Ohio air on these gorgeous trails:

The Summer of Love is alive and well at ComFest
June 22nd, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Local Communities, Music, Short North, The Arts
Columbus, Ohio is a town of many colors. The color this weekend in Goodale park will likely be tie-dye.
For 35 years The Community Fest, better known as ComFest, has showcased music, arts, actvisim and community cohesiveness in a free-wheeling, fun filled weekend of revelry and togetherness.

ComFest or Bust!!
ComFest is guided each year by the following principles:
1. We think that people ought to work for the collective good of all people rather than for personal gain. We support cooperation and collective activity rather than competition and individual profit.
2. The basic necessities of life are a right and not a privilege. People have the collective right to control the conditions of their lives.
3. People should strive to conduct their lives in harmony with the environment.
4. We recognize that there are primary attitudes which divide and oppress people. These attitudes are usually shown by prejudice against people on the basis of age, class, ability, income, race, sex, and sexual preference/ orientation.
5. We seek to eliminate these attitudes.
These principals illustrate the fact that ComFest truly has a purpose and is about much more than beer tents and rock and roll.
How you approach ComFest is up to you. For the diehard, be sure to get there early and stay late. You don’t want to miss anything. For the curious, perhaps a couple hours will give you your fill. Either way, if you are looking for something to do June 22–24, 2007 ComFest is a unique and colorful opportunity.

It’s tough being a Crew fan!
June 18th, 2007 categories: Columbus, Entertainment, Local Communities, Sports, Westerville
Until a few years ago when my twin daughters began playing soccer, I didn’t know the first thing about the game. In fact, I often made fun of one of my good friends from high school who is, to say the least, a soccer fanatic. And now, I have become a bit of a fanatic!
My daughters are entering their third season as a part of the WASA Eagles club. For most of the year, our family devotes 4 days a week or so to the sport I once jeered. Truth be told, I love it. The Mid Ohio Select Soccer League is a thriving organization and we have enjoyed seeing our girls and their friends learn, grow and challenge themselves.
Win, lose or draw, they are our children and we support them. As a parent, this is easy to do, but as a fan of the Columbus Crew it is a bit harder.

I do not consider myself a fair weather fan, but winning is nice. My new found passion for soccer has lead me to follow the only Major League Soccer team in our area.
The Crew were introduced in 1994 and in in 1999 opened the first soccer specific stadium in the United States. Fan support was strong and Columbus was honored to be a part of Major League Soccer. The story since then has been one of ups and downs.
The last few seasons the Crew has struggled, not making the playoffs since 2004. Last year, with storied coach Sigi Schmid coming on board, was billed as a re-building season. After a dismal 2006 season the “construction” is again active this year. With a roster which changes like Columbus area weather the Crew again have a firm grip on the basement spot in the Eastern Division.
But wait! There is hope! They are actually scoring goals and fortunately have tied more often than they have lost. This is a good thing in soccer as ties gain points for a team while losses do not. Somehow, someway there is still hope. At least from my perspective as a soccer convert there is hope.
In the meantime what can we as Columbus Crew Fans do to help?
1. Attend the games – Crew Stadium is a great venue and a fun place to take a date, have a family night out or just be alone in your soccer kilt
2. Watch the games – This year MLS has the best TV coverage ever
3. Stay positive – Remember, there is hope
4. Be patient – The Crew is here to stay as is evidenced by the planned training facility
The bottom line is we are lucky to have the Crew. Soccer is growing in the United States and will continue to do so. Clearly, we can not win them all but at the same time it can’t get much worse. If you are like me, you will find a way to put your disappointment aside and be a true fan, win or lose.
Go Crew!
